CHAPTER 8

Two days later, I walked back into the school hall and cursed softly when I spied Harrison inside.

Alone.

I'd purposely arrived five minutes late so that I wouldn't have to make small talk with him. Where were James and Ruth?

"They're not coming," Harrison confirmed when he spotted me hesitating at the door. "Problem with the babysitter."

I twisted my hands together, annoyance blooming. "And you didn't want to cancel?"

"I think it's best if we chatted privately," he answered, his gaze heavy with some emotion. "I think you've been avoiding me."

"No shit," I breathed.

"Can we sit and chat? Then we can go over reunion stuff, I swear."

Well, what choice did I have?

"Sure," I reluctantly agreed as I strolled stiffly towards him. I sat with a displaced sigh and placed my hands on the table, interlocking my fingers so I wouldn't be tempted to fidget.

He regarded me with an omniscient stare. "I'm not going to apologize for our kiss," he bluntly started. "I'm not sorry; frankly, I would do it again if you'd let me."

My mouth dropped at his audacious confession. "Is that supposed to make me feel better?"

His firm mouth tightened as he eyed my rigid fingers. "I wanna be open and honest with you. I think you've had enough bullshitters in your life. Even though the last thing I want to do is make you uncomfortable."

Too late.

"So I will apologize if you are, and I promise I won't bring it up again. You don't have to worry about me jumping your bones, no matter how much I want to."

Oh, God. The lewd images that accompanied that comment had me worrying for my sanity.

I wanted that, too. I was so screwed.

"In regards to Jessica–please let me finish," he implored when I tried to interrupt.

I sat back with a grunt and folded my arms protectively. His gaze gentled before he continued. "We ended our physical relationship when I was nineteen. I haven't so much as hugged her since then."

"What about lunching with her?" I blurted out before I could stop myself. Dammit, now it sounded like I cared.

Harrison grinned, his eyes lighting up at my apparent interest. I schooled my features, hoping my face didn't betray the climbing weed of jealousy.

"You mean the lunch we have with about eight other teachers in the staff room?"

"Oh." My cheeks warmed.

He fixed me with a pointed stare. "There's only one woman that I'm interested in, Gracie. And it's not Jessica."

I quietly sucked in oxygen. Not wanting to examine my wavering feelings for Harrison, I hid my stare from his to compose myself. It didn't help that I had sighted the familiar trace of desire and longing in his eyes.

"Now, reunion chat!"

The abrupt change in subject threw me. I kicked myself for hoping he would expound on his last statement, but in the end, I knew I wasn't quite ready for the poignant discussion his confession would arouse.

For the next forty minutes, Harrison discussed the finer details of the event: how many people had RSVP'd, the DJ,
